DIY natural Lipbalm

I'm featuring my lovely friend Polly on the blog again today. If you are a long time reader of this blog of mine you may remember her guest post on motherhood here and me talking about how we became friends here. She is such a lovely and inspiring lady and as well as being a wonderful mama, home schooler, blogger, designer and jewellery maker she ALSO makes the most amazing natural beauty products. We did a swap just before Christmas with an item from my shop for some of her amazing treats and I swear I have never felt so pampered (better than LUSH even, yes!).

I'll stop waffling now and hand you over to Polly, enjoy!

Hi there! Fritha asked me to share with you some tips for making natural products, I thought I'd go a step further and share a recipe. This is my favourite recipe for handmade lipbalm. It's easy to make and keeps your lips soft and lovely, especially helpful at this time of year. One of the best things about making your own products, is that you can choose your own, pure ingredients and customise it to suit your own personal tastes.

You'll Need:
2 tbls. olive oil
1/2 tsp. honey
3/4 tsp. beeswax — grated
1/2 tsp. pure cocoa butter
Flavored oil of your choice
1 vitamin E capsule

lipbalm ingredients

Using a bain marie {or a bowl over a saucepan} heat the oil, honey, beeswax and cocoa butter over a low heat until they are just melted. Remove from heat and allow to cool for 2-3 minutes.
Stir in the oil and contents of vitamin E capsule. In these I used sweet orange essential oil, as I love the uplifting scent, it reminds me of summer - which when we're in the depths of winter can be quite a nice reminder!
Pour into a small container, and leave to set. Note - this makes quite a soft lipbalm, perfect for pots. If you wish to pour it into lipbalm tubes, or just want a harder lipbalm, add a little more beeswax when you are melting the ingredients together.

thats so creative, I've never tried anything like that but would be cool to know you made it yourself and has only natural ingredients in it!

This looks like a lovely project to do with my girls. Maybe they'd stop stealing mine if they had their own hand made beautifully scented balm!

I read all of these easy sounding make your own beauty product recipes, but never take the time to make them. I have plenty of beeswax from making our own candles, so maybe I should start the New Year off right and make a batch.

Where do you get your products from? I would love to have a go, but obviously do not want to buy large quantities

This looks lovely! I'd love to try this as I seem to be allergic to everything lately. Where would be a good place to pick up the ingredients, please?

it really is, the great thing about the recipe is you can customise it to what scent you love, and it easy to make just one pot full or lots to give as gifts!

My lips always suffer in the winter, but since making my own lipbalm, they've been so much better - not dry or chapped at all

My girls love helping make this with me! If we're making more than one pot full at a time, I'll pour the mix into the pots before adding any essential oils, then each pot can be a different scent!

It's surprisingly easy to make - give it a go :)

I made this last night and I love it! Do you know how long it keeps for so I can make it in bulk?
