On Saturday my lovely friend Lizzie and I went along to a gin tasting class called G and Teatime with a Living Social voucher. It's only been the last year or so that I've started to enjoy gin properly thanks to a rather silly teenage incident of rather too much gin and a good few days of feeling very poorly! I've always been a bit jealous of people sipping their G&T's in the summer time when the smell still made me feel a bit funny.
Anyway something must of happened over these past two years (I dunno call it motherhood!) and I suddenly realise I actually do like gin, hurrah!
We were greeted with a yummy gin tea, cream cakes and sandwiches and were given a brief history about the origins of the spirt. We were then given a neat glass of gin with the option of tonic and some extras to make our cocktail (I chose basil and grapefruit which was a really nice addition). Over the next 90 minutes we were offered various different types of gin which we drank neat (one was really super strong and a little too much for me in the early afternoon!). We were showed how to clean our palette before we drank by swooshing the neat gin around our mouth like a mouthwash before we drank the rest. I'm not sure I tasted all the things I was supposed to but I think it did help me enjoy the spirt on its own without it tasting just of alcohol.
If there was one thing I would change I think I would have preferred a little more time to chat and drink slowly but I understand that there was a lot to fit in within the time frame. What I kind of love about deal sites like Living Social though is that you have an opportunity to try things you might not ordinarily have thought about before.
One good tip we learnt though was that Aldi gin is actually very good and is of the same quality as lots of the expensive gins, a very useful tip! I'm looking forward to stocking up our drinks cabinet ready for the summer.
I was given two tickets to G and Teatime through Living Social but all words and thoughts are my own
