Miffy Museum in the home of Dick Bruna

The Miffy Museum in Utrecht— This attraction is such a charming place to visit, especially if you’ve got little ones! Nestled in the heart of Utrecht in the Netherlands, this delightful museum is dedicated to Miffy (or “Nijntje”,” as she’s lovingly called in Dutch), the adorable bunny created by the legendary Dutch artist Dick Bruna.

From the moment you step in, it’s clear that this museum is any Miffy fans dream come true. The spaces are so thoughtfully designed, transforming Dick Bruna’s simple yet profound illustrations into a series of magical, interactive worlds. Each room offers a unique theme designed to stimulate young (or older) minds and encourage the kind of hands-on exploration that kids absolutely adore.

Miffy Museum – Enter Miffy’s World

As you wander through the museum, the first thing that strikes you is how everything is perfectly scaled down to kid-size. From tiny chairs to miniature houses, it’s all just the right size for little explorers. One of the things I noticed immediately was how inclusive it was for those who are neurodivergent. With two low sensory rooms, noise-canceling headphones on loan, and marked room transitions.

Interactive Play Zones at the Miffy Musuem

Each play zone in the Miffy Museum focuses on everyday activities but in a whimsical and engaging way. There’s a mini garden where kids can pretend to plant flowers or vegetables next to Miffy, and a little kitchen where they can ‘cook’ meals.

Another area that’s a hit is the traffic-themed room, where children can ride tiny bikes or drive small cars around safely marked lanes. They learn about traffic lights and zebra crossings, which is such a smart way of incorporating learning into play.

Artistic Inspiration

A nod to Dick Bruna’s artistic vision, there’s a space for budding artists too. Here, children can engage in crafts, drawing, and coloring, creating their own masterpieces inspired by the simplicity and bold colors typical of Miffy’s design. The museum staff often organize little workshops and storytelling sessions here, making it a lively spot that captivates the creative spirits of our kids.

Planning Your Visit

Thinking about visiting? Here are a few tips. The museum is quite popular, so booking your tickets in advance is a good idea to avoid disappointment. They operate on session timings to prevent overcrowding, which means everyone has a chance to fully enjoy the experience without it feeling too busy.

The layout is stroller-friendly and there’s a lovely little café where you can grab a coffee while your little ones dive into the world of Miffy. The Miffy Cafe was incredible with lots of vegan and veggie options.

We had our tickets as part of booking the Miffy-themed room at Stayokay Hostels which I’d recommend if you are looking for places to stay in Utrecht for one night. You can read about our stay here.

A Bonding Experience

One thing I cherished during our visit was seeing how the interactive settings fostered a beautiful bonding opportunity with my children. It was a joy to watch their faces light up with excitement as they moved from one activity to the next. As an adult, I found each room was a dopamine hit for myself and I loved it just as much.

Keepsakes and Memories

And of course, no visit would be complete without a stop at the Miffy shop. Packed with all the Miffy merch you could want from books and toys to unique memorabilia, it’s a great spot to pick up a souvenir to remember the day. I came away with a Miffy bag that I just couldn’t resist.

Final Thoughts

The Miffy Museum truly is more than just a tourist attraction in Utrecht; it’s a space where children can see and experience everyday life through Miffy’s eyes. For any family traveling to Utrecht or living nearby, it’s a must-visit place that promises a fun-filled day for both children and parents. The thoughtful design, educational play, and sheer cuteness of it all make it a heartwarming adventure.

So, whether you’re looking for things to do in Utrecht or just curious about this little gem, the Miffy Museum is sure to offer an enchanting and joyful experience for your family, creating memories that will last much longer than your visit. We left with full hearts and a deeper appreciation for the simplicity and beauty of childhood exploration—inspired, of course, by a small, adventurous bunny named Miffy.
