When planning an interior renovation or building a space from scratch, the materials you choose for your internal walls can have a huge impact, not just on how the space looks, but also on how it feels, functions, and even connects to the rest of your home or building.

Standard Wall Builds That Perform Well
For most homes and commercial spaces, a standard timber stud wall with insulation and plasterboard (drywall) is a solid option. A 2×4 stud wall with rockwool or fibreglass batts provides decent thermal and acoustic insulation. Add ½” or ⅝” drywall on either side, and you’re good to go.
Want better performance? Add a second layer of drywall with green glue in between to improve soundproofing. Resilient channels can also help decouple the wallboard from the frame, reducing sound transfer. You may want to consider this for bedrooms, media rooms, or flats with shared walls.
When Stone Walls Make Sense
Stone is still widely used in parts of the UK and Europe, especially in older properties. Its strength and sound isolation are unmatched, for obvious reasons. The thick stone or brick walls can practically deaden all outside noise. The trade-off? Poor Wi-Fi penetration and a lack of flexibility for things like routing cables or making changes later.
If you’ve already got stone walls, you can look to add mesh Wi-Fi access points to overcome the signal limitations. If you’re starting from scratch, stone isn’t always ideal for interior use unless you’re ok with poor connectivity.
Upgrades for Serious Durability and Quiet
For studios, home offices, or any space where sound control is important, you can build internal walls using staggered studs or even double-stud walls, paired with dense insulation like rockwool.
MDF, cement board, or even sandwich-style panels (e.g. MDF and rubber composite layers) can push durability and sound resistance further.
If you’re after a “dead” room with minimal resonance i.e. for audio recording or streaming, avoid plywood alone, as it tends to reflect sound. Instead, build standard walls and layer acoustic treatments like absorbers and diffusers on top. Panels made from materials like polyester fibre, Basotect, or even rockwool can be framed and added later for better control.
Prioritise What Matters Most to You
No wall material is perfect across the board. Drywall performs well for general use. Stone offers unbeatable sound blocking, but has poor connectivity. Acoustic layering and insulation are your best bet for specialised environments.
Don’t forget practical considerations: how easily you can run wires, hang shelves, or fix damage later on. And while some materials seem cheaper upfront (like plywood), they aren’t always great in the long term. Don’t skimp out on your building materials.
