Things to do when moving house – A checklist

Moving to a new house can be exciting, but the process of getting there can be tricky. There are lots of things to consider before the big move, which is why a checklist can come in handy to ensure that everything runs smoothly. Here is a checklist of things to do before moving house.

Sometimes it is hard to believe we’ve been our home for seven years now. So much has happened in that time, getting the cats, being engaged, marriage, and two kids later (born in this home) this house holds a lot of memories. Whilst I’ll be really sad to say goodbye to this place and how much
work we’ve put into it I’m excited about the idea of a new chapter in our lives and a new place to decorate.

Things to do when moving house

Firstly, start with decluttering your belongings. Moving house can be an excellent excuse for decluttering. Go through each room in your home, and donate, sell or discard anything that doesn’t have any sentimental value. This will make packing and unpacking at the new house easier and less time-consuming.

Secondly, start packing early. Packing is a daunting task that many people dread. Start packing up items that are not in frequent use and label the boxes accordingly. This way, you’ll only need to pack your everyday items in the days leading up to the move.

Thirdly, ensure that you notify all relevant parties of your new address. This can include the post office, banks, schools, and utility providers. Make a checklist of everyone that needs to know your new address, and notify them all at least two weeks before the move.

Fourthly, arrange for movers or a removal van in advance. Booking movers in advance is crucial to ensure that they are available on the day you need them. You can also rent a moving van, which is often a cost-effective option, but make sure that you have someone to help you move the heavy items.

Fifthly, prepare for items that cannot be transported. Some items, such as hazardous materials, can’t be transported. These can include cleaning agents, paint, and gasoline. Ensure that you dispose of these items in advance or make separate arrangements for transport.

Finally, prepare for the first few days in your new house. Ensure that you have basic items such as bathroom tissue, light bulbs, and cleaning supplies on hand. You may not feel like unpacking everything on the first day, so having essential items available will make those first few days easier.

In conclusion, moving house is an exciting and often stressful experience. Preparing and planning for the move in advance can help alleviate some of that stress. Refer to this checklist of things to do before moving house to ensure that you’re fully prepared for the big day.

I’m over on the EE blog today chatting about moving house tips if you fancy a look. Living through a fair few rentals (both growing up and in my adult life) I feel like I’ve picked up a few tips along the way. They have a brilliant broadband package for making moving home and being connected as easy as possible. As someone who works from home its essential that moving house doesn’t mean weeks of no internet.

Let me know if you have any tips on making a house move easier too! I really hope you enjoy reading my post and find it useful too.
