Over the weekend we took a trip to the SS Great Britain in Bristol. Exploring the Harbourside in Bristol always offers a wealth of attractions, with the SS Great Britain standing out as a highlight. Designed by the renowned Isambard Kingdom Brunel, this ship is a testament to Victorian engineering and is a must-see for those looking to visit Bristol.
The weather forecast predicted rain but we figured we would be inside the boat for a while anyway and decided to risk it. Loaded with anoraks and brollies ‘just in case’ it turned out it was the sunniest of days without a drop of rain! It was so super hot we couldn’t bear to be inside the ship for very long and spent a good while just running around the desk.

SS Great Britain a family day out
Brunel’s SS Great Britain ship is a complete work of art, wonderfully restored and filled with the sights, sounds, and even smells of the Victorian era (Don’t worry, they skip over the off-putting ones!). They have a brilliant way of bringing the past to life, with beautifully recreated living spaces and a sense we’ve left the 21st century at the dock.
During our visit, we arrived in the mid-afternoon, which provided a unique experience as the ship was less crowded. This allowed us to immerse ourselves fully in the meticulously recreated cabins, complete with lifelike models and ambient sounds, giving a genuine feel of life aboard during its operational days. My three-year-old was utterly captivated. Trying on Victorian-period costumes and running up and down the deck was his favorite.
A particularly striking feature is the view of the ship’s underside. The massive iron hull and rudder are visible beneath a glass sea, emphasizing the monumental feat of engineering achieved by Brunel. This perspective truly showcases the ship’s historical significance.
On deck, visitors can engage with various ship components, including the rigging and ship’s wheel. The knowledgeable staff are eager to demonstrate maritime skills, such as knot tying, enhancing the interactive experience.

Brunels Brain
We also visited the Brunel’s Institute, with a spectacular archive of all things Brunel. It was fascinating to dive into the mind of such a visionary. And as a bonus, the café has the loveliest slice of Victoria sponge.
Honestly, I can’t recommend this outing enough. The SS Great Britain is laden with stories and history, just waiting for you and your family to discover. You’ll leave the ship with a heart full of memories and a phone full of photos, cherishing your time on Bristol’s grande dame of the sea.
So, next time you’re looking for something to do on a sunny (or let’s be realistic, overcast) Bristol day, grab your kiddos and head over to the Harbour. Let them clutch their tickets excitedly as they march aboard. Let them soak up the history, the adventure, and yes, the pure fun that the Bristol SS Great Britain has to offer. It’s a gem, just like Bristol itself.
In summary, the SS Great Britain in Bristol docks is a must-visit attraction. It offers a unique glimpse into maritime history and the genius of Isambard Kingdom Brunel. Whether you’re a history enthusiast or seeking an engaging family outing, this iconic ship provides a memorable experience!
