The Stunning Forest of Dean Sculpture Trail in Beechenhurst

We recently took a trip to the Forest of Dean Sculpture Trail and I would highly recommend a visit. Trust me, it’s an absolute must-visit if you’re in the area!

The Forest of Dean Sculpture Trail

The Forest of Dean is nestled in the heart of Gloucestershire, a haven of natural beauty that feels like a world away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. As a parent, finding activities that the whole family can enjoy can sometimes be a challenge, but the Beenchenhurst sculpture trail in the Forest of Dean is a gem that ticks all the boxes.

Meandering through the forest on a (rather rainy afternoon) felt rather magical. surrounded by towering ancient trees as the sunlight filters through the leaves above. And then, amidst this natural wonderland, you come across incredible sculptures that blend seamlessly with their surroundings. It’s a sensory treat that both kids and adults will appreciate.

Beechenhurst Trail

The Beechenhurst trail itself is about 4.5 miles long in its entirety, however, you can choose to take one of the many shorter walks and just tick off a few of the sculptures if you have little children. The well-marked path leads you through a series of sculptures from whimsical woodland creatures to thought-provoking installations, each piece tells its own story and adds a touch of magic to the forest.

As we set off on the Forest of Dean sculpture trail my children were immediately captivated by running ahead and spotting the art pieces. I think it really helped jolly them along on the walk and keep them entertained.

Throughout the trail, we encountered a variety of sculptures, each one as unique and intriguing as the last. It was a treasure hunt of art and imagination, with surprises around every corner. Our absolute favourite was ‘Cathedral, by Kevin Atherton (1986).

But it wasn’t just the sculptures that made this experience so memorable. The forest itself was a haven of tranquility and a playground for our senses. The gentle rustling of leaves, the soothing sounds of birdsong, we even saw a double rainbow! Making it the perfect backdrop for our adventure. We took our time, absorbing the beauty of our surroundings and allowing the forest to work its magic.

Along the way, we found cozy picnic spots where we could rest and refuel. We laughed, we chatted, and we savored the simple joy of being together in nature. It was a welcome respite from the demands of modern life, a chance to disconnect from screens and reconnect with each other and the world around us.

As we neared the end of the trail, we felt an undeniable sense of accomplishment. The Forest of Dean sculpture trail awakened our curiosity, sparked our imagination, and reminded us of the beauty that can be found in the simplest of moments.

If you find yourself craving an adventure that combines art, nature, and family fun, I wholeheartedly recommend a visit to the sculpture trail Forest of Dean. It’s an experience that will leave you with a deep appreciation for the wonders of the natural world and a renewed sense of childlike wonder. Trust me, you won’t regret it.
