First things first, how do you get to Schloss Drachenburg from Bonn or Cologne? Don’t worry, it’s easy peasy. There are train services available from both cities to Konigswinter, the nearest town to the castle. From Bonn, you can take S-Bahn line 66 or bus number 520, which takes around 25-30 minutes. If you’re traveling from Cologne, take the S-Bahn line 18 or 66 and transfer to line 66 to Konigswinter. The journey takes around an hour from Cologne. Once in Konigswinter, you can take the charming Cogwheel train, which will take you to Schloss Drachenburg in just a few minutes (note this only runs in the summer). If like us you visit in winter the walk up the hill is steep but only takes 30 minutes.

Konigswinter is also known for its rich culture and history. If you’re a foodie, you’re in luck! The town is home to some fantastic restaurants and cafes, where you can try some delicious local delicacies like Reibekuchen, a kind of potato pancake, or sample some of the famous German beers. We ate in Kaufmannsladen which is a hipster type of cafe/bookshop that I highly recommend!
Another highlight of Konigswinter is its famous Christmas market. From late November to December, the town transforms into a winter wonderland, featuring traditional wooden stalls selling handmade gifts, sweets, and glühwein, a warm spiced wine that will keep you cozy in the chilly weather. It’s the perfect place to get into the holiday spirit and soak up the festive atmosphere.
