It’s true that splurging on action-packed, Insta-worthy family activities can be great now and then. However, fun times are not necessarily dependent on how “cool” a destination is, or how much cash you spend. For example, you’ve probably had as much fun at a public park as you did at some fancy event you were forced to go to. You, your partner, and your kids probably even have a lot of fun in your own home on most weekends.

Family Activities for your next trip
At some point, your family may need some time away from home to reset your relationships, expand your collective horizons, and create valuable once-in-a-lifetime shared experiences together. But even if you’re off on the quietest or most laid-back of vacations, you can still have loads of fun—if you plan things right.
To that end, here are a few easy, low-key family activities that are sure to make your next trip both more memorable and more enjoyable:
1) Go for a hike
Most popular destinations feature multiple beginner-level hiking trails, many of which are completely free and safe for families with children. If you’re all up for it, a hike is a sure way to connect with nature at your own pace and create lasting memories together. To keep things enjoyable, make sure everyone packs their essentials, like comfy capri leggings for women or cargo shorts for men, practical shoes, sunblock, and plenty of water.
2) Take a Scenic Drive
If hikes aren’t your thing, that’s OK. When traveling through the country, you can still take in a lot of wonderful natural sights from the comfort of your family car. The next time you’re planning a long road trip, try to hit at least a couple of memorable diversions to keep things interesting for your partner and little ones.
3) Go to The Beach
Weather permitting, public beaches offer tons of recreational possibilities for not a lot of money. Make sure to time your arrival to catch the sunset or sunrise for an extra magical time.
4) Try Birdwatching
Strictly speaking, all you need to get into birdwatching is heaps of patience, though a pair of binoculars does help. Before you and your family leave for your destination, look up any prominent native birds and popular birdwatching spots nearby. Many interesting bird species can even be found in cities, so remember to keep your eyes peeled whenever you find some free time.
5) Do Some Stargazing
You won’t spot that many birds against the night sky, but the stars are a different story. Or at least, they are in places where light pollution isn’t an issue.
If you live in a big city, you might not even realize how bright the stars are. When you and your family next head out for an outdoor adventure, make it a point to pack a few blankets and find an open field so that all of you can ponder the mysteries of the universe together.
6) Take a Factory Tour
Both kids and adults can get a kick out of seeing how things are made. Thankfully, the country has dozens and dozens of factories that offer walking tours to anyone interested. Best of all, many of these places will give your family a wonderful behind-the-scenes glimpse (and for edible products, maybe even some samples) for free.
7) Enjoy a Free Concert
Before you leave for your destination, check local event listings for any scheduled free concerts or outdoor music performances. These events can be fun diversions for the whole family, especially for music lovers.
8) Look Up Historical Sites
Be sure to read up on any historical sites, monuments, and landmarks that are just a short hop from your chosen destination. Understanding the context behind these places can make the destination come alive for your family, sparking their imaginations and giving your vacation a dimension that it wouldn’t have had otherwise.
9) Take in the Sights, Smells, and Flavors at a Farmer’s Market
A farmer’s market is always a great place to score unusual, highly localized finds. If nothing else, they’re almost certainly excellent places to grab a hearty meal with your family and take in the culinary culture of the place you’re visiting.
10) Check out a Local Library
Local libraries are not usually the first thing anyone thinks about when they think of fun times with family. However, a lot of libraries in major destinations are steeped in history and offer an amazing array of services for free. These underappreciated knowledge centers even offer countless rare titles that are simply not available online or anywhere else. Depending on the place, the library may have activities like an upcoming storytelling session that your young kids would enjoy.
11) Look Up Free Museums
The most prominent museums aren’t exactly cheap for large groups. However, there are plenty of less-visited, but still excellent museums that offer free admission on certain days. Take advantage of these opportunities to explore art, science, history, or culture together with your loved ones.
Memorable Getaways Are Always Within Reach
Despite what your social media feed would have you think, wonderful family getaways and family activities don’t always need to cost tens of thousands of pounds. The truth, is you don’t need to break the bank to create cherished memories. You also don’t need to be exceptionally active or full of adrenaline to enjoy yourselves either.
Perhaps all you need is your camera, your family travel essentials, and a shared sense of adventure and open-mindedness. Those will be more than enough to prepare all of you for a journey filled with discovery and quality time with those you hold closest to your heart.
