I’ve been meaning to tell you all about this magical little spot I stumbled upon during our trip to North Wales – it’s a true hidden gem, tucked away like a secret waiting to be whispered. Nestled under the magnificent Menai Suspension Bridge in Anglesey, Plas Cadnant Hidden Gardens is the kind of place where fairy tales seem to leap off the pages and come to life, and I am so here for it!
Imagine this – looking for things to do in North Wales on a slightly grey day, and you find yourself searching for gardens to explore, not expecting much. But as you step through the gates, it’s like wandering straight into Narnia, sans the wardrobe. It’s not just a garden; it feels like a love letter to nature. Truly, these are probably the most beautiful gardens I’ve ever seen.

I get it; ‘Hidden Gardens’ sounds like something straight out of a fantasy novel, right? But oh my gosh, Plas Cadnant is just that. Something about this place feels like it’s alive with stories, each leaf and flower whispering tales of eras long past. You’d half expect to turn a corner and bump into a Victorian lady, sketchbook in hand, capturing the wild beauty of the place.
A Historical Hug in the Present
You’re walking on the grounds of a grand restoration project, where the present hugs history. It’s a heartwarming thought that the origins of these gardens date back to the 1800s! They were once hidden away from the world, untouched and overgrown – think ‘Secret Garden’ vibes but without having to find a key. And now, thanks to a loving hand, they’re back to tell their story, and let me tell you, it’s simply captivating.
The Walled Garden – A Hidden Sanctuary
Let’s dive into this garden goodness, shall we? First up, The Walled Garden – an absolute fave of mine. With its tall protective walls, it feels like Mother Nature’s safe space. You’ll find fruit trees, vibrant flower beds, and examples of ornamental plants growing harmoniously, all warm and cozy within their protective stone embrace.
I was wandering here, and do you know what struck me? The quiet – it’s not silent, but the sounds are different, gentle, as if even the breeze whispers through the leaves so as not to disturb the peace.
The Valley Garden – A Symphony of Nature’s Best
Next comes the Valley Garden. Oh, just thinking about it sends this delicious shiver of excitement down my spine! Here, nature is the maestro, conducting a symphony of colours and scents, with trees that seem to stretch their branches in a standing ovation. There’s a stream – and get this – with waterfalls that play the most beautiful music, rambling and giggling over rocks like children at play.
I spent a lot of time saying to my husband, ‘We could be in a Lord of the Rings movie!’ I’m not sure what the rules are about swimming in the stream, but I imagine that would be so fun in the summer if it’s a possibility.
The Pleasure Grounds – A Classic English Garden
The Pleasure Grounds, charmingly traditional, reminds me of those grand English gardens we read about in Jane Austen novels. But let’s keep it real; even Miss Austen couldn’t quite do justice to the way the sunlight dances here or how the flowers curtsy to you in the gentlest of breezes.
Spotting Red Squirrels and Seasonal Beauty
One of the most magical surprises of our visit? Spotting a UK red squirrel darting between trees! Plas Cadnant is known for being home to red squirrels, a rare sight in most parts of the UK. If you’re lucky, you might just see one yourself!
Something I adore about Plas Cadnant is its seasonal wardrobe change. Every visit is beautifully unique. Spring showcases bluebells nodding their golden heads as if to say, ‘Well done, dear, for making it through winter.’ Summer is a canvas splashed with the brightest hues, autumn an amber and gold tapestry, while winter? A crystalline wonderland.
The Tea Rooms – A Perfect End to a Walk
When tummies start to rumble, which let’s be honest, is a significant part of any family adventure, the tea rooms are a treat! With cakes that would have Mary Berry nodding in appreciation and locally sourced treats, it’s like the cherry on top of an already delightful day. Vegan and gluten-free options are available too!
How to Get to Plas Cadnant Hidden Gardens
As a car-free family, we took the bus to Menai Bridge, and from there, it was a 25-minute walk to the entrance. Fifteen of those minutes were along Menai High Street and ten up the driveway to the gardens, which felt just as beautiful as the gardens themselves at the time. Keep an eye out for red squirrels!

Relaxing at Dylan’s Menai Bridge
After a magical day exploring Plas Cadnant Hidden Gardens, we headed to Dylan’s Menai Bridge for a well-deserved break. This charming restaurant in Menai Bridge sits right by the water and offers stunning views of the Menai Strait. We ordered a glass of wine and settled in for a game of Uno, the perfect way to unwind after hours of wandering through walled gardens, waterfalls, and secret paths. If you’re looking for Menai Bridge restaurants to relax in after a day of adventuring, I can’t recommend Dylan’s enough!
Where We Stayed When Visiting Menai Bridge and North Wales
During our time in North Wales, we based ourselves on Bellech Beach and stayed in this holiday cottage. We found it to be the perfect spot for traveling to other beauty spots in the area whilst also being on the beach! If you’re looking for accommodation in Anglesey, I’d highly recommend staying somewhere coastal to really soak up the best of the area.
