There is something about autumn that makes me want to embrace all things cosy. The cooler mornings, the changing leaves, the excuse to drink approximately 15 cups of tea a day and, of course, the return of knitwear! I think autumn might actually be my favourite season for getting dressed. I love layering, mixing textures and rediscovering pieces that have been tucked away during the warmer months.
One of the trends I’m particularly loving this year is the return of the argyle jumpers. It’s one of those classic patterns that never really goes away, but this autumn it seems to be having a bit of a moment again.
Think cosy, slightly nostalgic knitwear with a little bit of a preppy feel, but with plenty of room to make it your own. I’m talking Gilmore Girls autumn vibes, but perhaps with a little more colour!

The Argyle Jumpers Trend for Autumn 2026
Argyle is probably a pattern you associate with traditional knitwear, vintage fashion or perhaps your grandad’s favourite jumper (in the best possible way!). But I love how something so classic can be styled to feel completely modern.
Traditionally, argyle features overlapping diamond shapes, often in fairly muted colours. This season, though, I’m particularly drawn to brighter, more playful interpretations of the pattern. For my own autumn outfit, I chose this gorgeous oversized yellow and cream argyle jumper from Very. I absolutely love the buttery yellow shade, which feels cheerful without being too bright, and the cream balances it beautifully.
I think sometimes we associate autumn fashion with nothing but browns, burgundies and dark greens, but there’s no reason we can’t bring a little sunshine into our wardrobes too!

How I Styled My Argyle Jumper
For this look, I wanted something comfortable and relaxed that still felt a little bit put together.
I paired my yellow and cream argyle jumper with some loose-fitting olive-green trousers, and I love how the colours work together. The green gives the outfit an earthy, autumnal feel, while the yellow brings a lovely pop of colour.
I’m a big fan of oversized silhouettes, especially when it comes to knitwear. There’s something so comforting about a jumper you can properly snuggle into, and I love pairing looser shapes together rather than always trying to balance an oversized top with something fitted.
The result is an outfit that feels effortless, comfortable and still quite playful. It’s exactly the sort of thing I’d wear for a weekend walk, a trip to a bookshop or an afternoon exploring somewhere new.
How to Wear Colourful Knitwear in Autumn
One of my favourite things about fashion is experimenting with colour combinations, and I think autumn is a brilliant time to do that.
If you’re tempted by a colourful argyle jumper but aren’t sure what to pair it with, my biggest tip would be to look at the colours already in your wardrobe.
Yellow looks particularly lovely with olive green, as I’ve styled it here, but I also think it would work beautifully with chocolate brown, denim or even a soft pink.
You don’t necessarily need to buy an entirely new outfit to embrace a trend. Sometimes it’s simply about finding one piece you love and experimenting with what you already own. For me, that’s what makes getting dressed fun!
Other Ways to Style an Argyle Jumpers
Although I’ve gone for a relaxed look here, one of the best things about an argyle jumper is how versatile it can be.
For a more traditional preppy outfit, try layering one over a white collared shirt with tailored trousers and loafers. It’s a lovely combination for work or days when you want to feel a little smarter. Alternatively, an oversized argyle jumper with wide-leg jeans and trainers is perfect for casual weekends.
I also love the idea of pairing one with a midi skirt and ankle boots for something a little more dressed up.
If you’re looking to experiment with this trend, Very has a lovely selection of argyle jumpers, with plenty of different colours and styles to choose from.
Choosing Knitwear You’ll Wear Again and Again
As much as I enjoy trying new trends, I’m also a big believer in choosing clothes that you’ll genuinely enjoy wearing beyond one season.
I don’t think refreshing your wardrobe needs to mean replacing everything you already own. Often, adding one or two pieces that work with your existing clothes is enough to make things feel fresh again.
That’s what I love about argyle. It’s such a timeless pattern, and although it might be particularly popular right now, it’s something you can easily bring out year after year.
I can already imagine styling this jumper with different trousers, jeans and perhaps even layered over a dress as the weather gets colder.
Embracing Cosy Autumn Style
Ultimately, I think autumn fashion should be about feeling good in what you’re wearing, whether that’s a classic neutral outfit or something a little more colourful.
For me, this yellow argyle jumper is the perfect combination of cosy, nostalgic and fun. It’s comfortable enough for everyday adventures but still feels like I’ve made a little effort.
And if an outfit makes me feel like I should be wandering through the woods before stopping for a coffee and a slice of cake, well, that’s pretty much my ideal autumn afternoon!
