Habitat table in Mid-century modern dining room

The Heart and Soul of the Dining Room Furniture

There’s something magical about those moments when our whole tribe plonks down together around the dining table, isn’t there? It’s one of those golden pockets of time, where the craziness of our family life finds a little pause, a little breath, nestled in the heart of our dining room furniture.

Dining Room Furniture

Coming from a family of five children I know only too well how important eating together as a family was to my parents. It was a time we were all certain to be in the same place at the same time. A time to recount stories of our day and enjoy each other’s company.

You see, the dining table, however well or charmingly worn, is so much more than a piece of furniture. It’s a gathering spot, the witness to our daily routined rituals, a place playing host to a medley of meaningful conversations and shared laughs. But most importantly, it’s where the simple yet essential act of sharing a meal transforms into irreplaceable moments of family bonding.

As a brand, we have used Habitat pieces in our home for over a decade (and going either further back to before we met Tom, who used to work in their Bristol store!). We’ve always known that the quality of their products is held to a high standard and from a design point of view are always on point and definitely to our taste. We checked out their dining furniture sets and were impressed. These are the items we went for.

We chose the Belami table which is perfect for a family of four. We didn’t want to go for an overly large table as we like to keep this middle room quite clear and felt that anything larger would crowd it (and be an excuse to dump things on the table more!). It’s an ash table which then has a clear lacquer coating on top. I love how light the wood is as our home doesn’t get a huge amount of light, so I feel like it somehow brightens the room. We paired it with the Belami benches that you can also get in this range rather than dining room chairs. You can buy the table as a dining table set or with or without the benches, but I think they work perfectly, and you can also store them under the table to create even more space in the room if needed.

This all-encompassing exchange is food for the soul. It strengthens our bonds, makes our kiddos feel heard and valued, fires up their social skills, and fosters an atmosphere of sharing and well-being that’s priceless. All this twirling around the hub of the family home—the humble dining room table. So here’s my two-pence: Invest some love and thought into your dining room furniture. Consider it more than just a spot to chomp down your food; see it as a canvas of memories waiting to be color-splashed.

To decorate our beautiful new tableware, I went with the dark linen table runner and napkins. We then chose the Maddox plates and pasta bowls which are made from grey speckled stoneware. For the cutlery, we chose the Turini in satin which I particularly love as it had a more matte effect than the usual shine you get with crockery (it’s also great to photograph for this reason too!)

One of my favourite pieces of the Habitat dining furniture  is the Oliver pink speckled oven dish. It feels like a real display piece as well as being perfect to cook those firm family favourites in. I love the speckled effect on the cream side of the dish against the pink which will match against the grey of the Maddox plates.

The clock above the table is the Spektrum brown clock which I think goes perfectly with our slightly retro / Scandinavian themed home.

Lastly, we chose the Klein gold brushed brass tea light candelabra as a bit of a centerpiece for when we are entertaining. For the drinking glasses, we opted for Dora pink glass tumblers and the Vienna champagne flutes. We love all our new Habitat dining pieces. Perfect for family meals and also for special occasions!

Our dining room furniture holds our stories, captures our giggles, supports our plates, and sometimes, even our slightly-too-bold dance moves. It’s a legacy piece, passed on from meal to meal, crumb to crumb, memory to memory.

So dust off those placemats, rally your wonderful bunch, and gather around your table, your grand old stage. Because, at the end of the day, the important thing isn’t what’s on the table, but who’s around it.

Scraped knees, spilled juice, histories told, futures dreamt, and meals shared—the heart of our homes and the soul of family life. That’s the true value of our dining room furniture.
