We’ve been living in Cardiff for ten months now and finally took a trip to Castell Coch. If you’re a fan of fairy tales and magical castles, then this enchanting place is an absolute must-visit.
Castell Coch
Nestled in the heart of the beautiful Welsh countryside, Castell Coch is a jaw-dropping vision of gothic wonder. Picture a castle straight out of your favorite storybook, perched on a hilltop and surrounded by lush greenery. Its distinctive exterior, with its pointed towers and charming red accents, is enough to make you say ‘Instagram dream’. As soon as I laid eyes on Castell Coch, I couldn’t help but feel like I had stepped into a magical fairy tale.
A History of Castle Coch
The allure of Castle Coch lies not only in its captivating exterior but also in the rich history that permeates its walls. Originally built on the remains of a 13th-century fortress, the Cardiff castles we see today was primarily the creation of the 19th-century eccentric architect, William Burges.
John Crichton-Stuart, 3rd Marquess of Bute, inherited the castle in 1848. One of Britain’s wealthiest men, with interests in architecture and antiquarian studies, he employed the architect William Burges to rebuild the castle, “as a country residence for occasional occupation in the summer”, using the medieval remains as a basis for the design. He made little use of his new retreat, and in 1950 his grandson, the 5th Marquess of Bute, placed it into the care of the state. It is now controlled by the Welsh heritage agency Cadw.
Burges was renowned for his love of lavish details, and he certainly didn’t hold back when it came to Castell Coch. From the intricately carved woodwork to the vibrant stained glass windows, every nook and cranny of this castle is a feast for the eyes.
The interior of Castell Coch is like stepping into a medieval dream. The rooms are filled with sumptuous velvet furnishings, ornate tapestries, and sparkling chandeliers that bring a sense of grandeur and opulence to every corner. We used the Cadw audio guide to explore the winding staircases, hidden passages, and secret chambers. Listening to its history and feeling like we were in a real-life castle adventure!
How to get to Castell Coch
But it’s not just the interior that is worth exploring. The grounds surrounding Castell Coch are equally beautiful. As you stroll through the Fforest Fawr you’ll be treated to stunning views of the surrounding countryside. We took the train from Cathays station to Taff’s Well and walked a 30-minute walk through the woods to the castle.
Castell Coch is located just a short drive from both Cardiff and Newport, making it easily accessible for a day trip or a weekend getaway. The castle provides parking facilities, and there’s also a quaint little tea room where you can enjoy a delicious cup of Welsh tea and some bara brith. I highly recommend trying their Welsh cakes!
It’s also worth mentioning that Castell Coch hosts various family-friendly events throughout the year. From medieval reenactments to storytelling sessions, there are plenty of opportunities to immerse yourself in the magical atmosphere of the castle. These events not only entertain but also educate, allowing your children to learn more about history, culture, and the importance of preserving heritage.
