As a family that loves to explore, we’re always on the lookout for easy and enjoyable day trips from Bristol that are accessible by train. If you are new to this blog then we are a family that travels exclusively car-free and loves promoting train travel in the UK. We loved The convenience of rail travel means we can relax and enjoy the journey! Here are some of our favourite day trips from Bristol on the train that offer fun-filled experiences for the whole family.

Bristol to Bath by Train – 11 minutes

Let’s start with an easy one. Just a short 11-minute train ride from Bristol Temple Meads, Bath is a treasure trove of history and culture. The city’s stunning Georgian architecture and Roman heritage provide a picturesque backdrop for a family day out. We love spending time in the Fashion Museum and the incredible bookshop that is Toppings. Bath also sports some great charity shops and the Boston Tea Party Alfred Street is a favourite. Afterward, a stroll through the Royal Victoria Park offers a chance to burn off some energy in the expansive play area.

Cardiff – Just under an hour

We recently moved from Bristol to Cardiff and I have to say we didn’t take advantage of the city as a day trip before we did! As the capital of Wales, Cardiff offers historical landmarks like the impressive Cardiff Castle, a few minutes walk from the station. For those seeking arts and culture, the National Museum Cardiff has an incredible collection of art and natural history, while Cardiff Bay provides a vibrant waterfront with restaurants, shops, and iconic venues like the Wales Millennium Centre.

Don’t sleep on visiting Bute Park, especially in summer, situated just behind the castle and easily walkable from the station. Our favourite cafe there is the Secret Garden Cafe. Or spend your day exploring the beautiful arcades filled with independent shops and cafes.

Exeter – Just over an hour

Just a little over an hour by train from Bristol. This charming city boasts the stunning Exeter Cathedral which, as well as being a beautiful piece of architecture, is great for a little run around in the gardens. The underground Passages tour takes you through medieval tunnels beneath the city — a fun and unique experience for all ages. With plenty of parks, cafes, and family-friendly attractions, Exeter makes for a memorable and laid-back day out.

If you are looking for places to eat with the family in Exeter then we actually found the Imperial Weatherspoons a great chilled-out experience. It’s set in an old orangery and has a huge pub garden which is great in warmer weather. Another recommendation would be Sacred Grounds Cafe, which serves beautiful nutritious foods and is situated next to some great independent shops.

Cheltenham – 40 minutes from Bristol

Known for its beautiful Regency architecture and great shopping, Cheltenham has plenty to keep the whole family entertained. Our kids loved exploring Pittville Park, with its large playground, boating lake, and friendly ducks.

As the largest park in the town, it features an incredible playground, beautiful boating lake, and plenty of open space for picnics and games. Adults can enjoy scenic walks and the historic Pittville Pump Room. With its mix of nature, history, and fun, Pittville Park offers something for everyone.

Oxford 1 hour 14 minutes (fastest)

A day trip to Oxford by train from Bristol takes around an hour and a half, making it a perfect destination for a family-friendly adventure. Once in this historic city, a visit to The Story Museum is a must — especially for book lovers and imaginative minds. This interactive museum celebrates the power of stories in all their forms, with immersive exhibitions, creative play spaces, and themed rooms that bring beloved tales to life. Kids can dress up, explore fantastical worlds, and even step inside famous story settings, while adults will appreciate the nostalgia!

After the museum, you can stroll through Oxford’s beautiful streets, explore its famous colleges, or relax in one of its many charming cafés. Oxford and The Story Museum offer a magical and educational day out for visitors of all ages.

Top places to visit from Bristol by Train

Bristol’s excellent train connections make it the perfect base for a variety of entertaining and family-oriented day outings. Within ten minutes, you can experience historic Bath with its Roman Baths and Georgian architecture, or for under and hour take a trip to Cardiff for its mix of medieval history and cosmopolitan waterfront feel.

Cheltenham offers pretty parks like Pittville and exposure to the picturesque Cotswolds, while Exeter offers history as well as activities within its cathedral, Quayside, and underground tunnels. Oxford’s Story Museum and pretty university landscape for a culture and fantasy day out are ideal for a day to be remembered. There is an independent mix of things to do for every place, making these Bristol train trips straightforward, fun, and full of experience.
